Did you know that computers and other electronics can contain substances like lead andmercury that can contaminate our environment if they’re not disposed of properly? This fact inspired the Renaissance Saint Luke staff to lead a building-wide electronics recycling initiative. Our residents and staff collected old computers, cell phones and other electronic devices and delivered them to the City of Chicago’s Household Chemicals and Computer Recycling Facility. This facility wipes the computers’ hard drives and then either incinerates them in an environmentally friendly way or re-purposes them, donating them to local schools, non-profit groups and low-income families. Thirty two pieces of equipment were collected, along with countless wires and computer components. The initiative was a huge success and we hope to make this an annual offering.
