Aloha from the island of Greenview

102_3757This year, Greenview Place celebrated the unofficial close of summer with a trip to the tropics. And what a trip it was!

Without leaving the city, residents, staff and guests were transported to a Hawaiian night out.  As always, this year’s luau was a huge smash hit. The staff really outdid themselves, and residents came ready to party. We had more people attend than ever before. Everyone was out for a Hawaiian good time.  102_3762

To get ready for the party residents donned their best Hawaiian shirts and flower leis. The men received dried grass hats, while the ladies had traditional grass skirts and flowers for their hair. Residents posed for a photo shoot in their festive outfits.

102_3760The spread included ham and pineapple sliders, sweet and sour Hawaiian meat balls, tropical pork kabobs, fruit skewers, and coconut cake. We even had strawberry daiquiris and piña coladas to get the party started! And then, the highlight of the evening was a visit from dance troop The Barefoot Hawaiian. They hulaed the night away, inviting residents and staff to participate in some very special dance performances.

Future luaus are sure to keep getting better and better. Mark your calendars now for next August. We look forward to seeing you at the next one.

Crafty vets

Many people use crafting as a way to relax and distress. It allows you to focus your mind, become absorbed in a task, express yourself and create something wonderful. IMG_0191 - Copy

As part of the activity programming at Greenview Place, we have partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs to offer our resident vets the opportunity to do a therapeutic art or craft project. The program – which offers DIY kits – is free to our veterans, and already it’s popular here. We had a great group attend the first session, and our instructor was very kind and helpful.

The craft event also offers our vets the opportunity to thank the persons responsible for getting the kits together, which is a good way to link grateful Americans with our veterans.

IMG_0189Each pack contains all the materials necessary to create something beautiful and one of a kind. There are kits for leather working, model planes, painting, and photography. One of our veterans, John R., finished a picture of The Statue of Liberty, the US Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Memorial.

We hope to see the program grow, and, as part of our Labor Day festivities, we plan to host a Veterans Pride Flag Craft. Veterans, their families and friends are all welcome to join us as we make desktop flags as a reminder of what each veteran has contributed to America.

Love the arts and fun? Move to Renaissance West!

Bucktown, Logan Square and Wicker Park are just a few of Chicago’s neighborhoods known for their appreciation and love for the arts.

MP900382906To celebrate and cultivate that love, Bucktown Arts was born. This non-profit provides arts and education programs in the Bucktown area and is also responsible for creating the Bucktown Arts Fest, a beautiful two-day festival that’s held each summer in Senior Citizens Memorial Park. This sweet little park across the street from Holstein Park is perfect for art shows, and you’ll find it at 2228 North Oakley Street.

This year, the festival will be held on August 24th and 25th from 11am-7pm. It will showcase almost 200 artists, live music performances, poetry, theatre, dance, and activities for the kiddos. MP900289484

Lucky for those that live at wonderful Renaissance West, the festival is just a hop, skip, and a jump away. It’s a few streets to the east of us. No excuse to not have fun while the festival is going on!

There is always something fun and exciting happening in Logan Square and its surrounding neighborhoods. If you’re wondering why that is, well let’s take a look…

MP910220837According to, Logan Square is one of the “hottest nabes” in the United States. Their December 2012 Curbed Cup showcased Logan Square as a quarterfinalist in the city competition. We think you’ll find it interesting reading.

Curbed says that some of the neighborhood’s many appealing factors include “wide park-like boulevards, a unique mix of housing types, public transportation, bike and walking paths, progressive local shops and a really cool vibe. The convenience of two Logan Square blue line stops makes it a destination for those wanting to get more for their money.”

But the writer forgot to mention the festivals, the fun, and the neighborhood associations like LSNA that unite the community and are invested in its growth and development. Renaissance West is proud to be a part of the betterment of this community.

If you or someone you know is on the hunt for a studio apartment, give us a call at 773-862-2500. You’ll love our affordable prices and numerous amenities – like our brand new Club Room and Fitness Center!

After you call, be sure to take a stroll to the Square to enjoy the arts, the beauty, and all lovely Logan Boulevard has to offer.

Great Deals in Chicago!

I admit it – I’m a big fan of Chicago. I love this city!  I’m always on the lookout for what’s happening here, and I’ve found a winner. I’d like to share this fantastic Facebook page I found called Free Things to Do in Chicago. The page was created by Steve and Sue Lavey to show others that it is possible to find lots of free and low-cost things to do in Chicago. Really! freechicago

You’ll find daily deals – sometimes several within the same day. I’ve personally taken advantage of some of these great deals and freebies that perhaps I might not have otherwise considered. You might just find that your favorite coffee shop is having a free cup of joe day. Or, you’ll spot discounted Chicago boat tours, a free concert, and the list goes on.

The Laveys have also created Facebook pages for great deals in other cities. I encourage you to check out the Chicago page because you never know what great deals you might come across.

If you’re not a “fan” of Facebook, you’re missing out on something good. And free!

Springtime – on the fence

I look forward to the warmer months and various seasons here in Chicago. If you’ve lived any time here you know the weather can be more like summer half the year and winter-like temperatures the other six months, with a few days scattered about that can honestly be described as seasonal.

?????????????????????????????????????I’m not complaining, though! I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else though. I love Chicago.

I think even meteorologists can go a little crazy with the unpredictable changes in weather here. Who wouldn’t? I guess it does  keep them on their toes, and certainly makes for interesting conversation at the TV stations. They must live for this kind of stuff!

Chicago weather is more like springtime – on the fence. Mother Nature can never quite seem to make up her mind…  Iceberg in Blue Antarctic Waters

Today is no different. As I sit here writing this, I can hear the rain gently hitting the window with gray skies above; shivers. Kind of gives the city a less than welcoming look. A quick walk to a local store for a beverage and I truly felt like grabbing my winter coat out of the trunk. I still may do that!

When the weather is ideal we like to barbecue, and on colder days throw together a nice sopa (soup) to warm up the family with a little comfort food. I have to admit, it’s days like this that bring to mind grabbing a comforter and watching a movie at home.

Close Up Leaf & Water DropsI can speak for the city when I say, that we are all impatiently waiting for summer to show its beautifully bright skies and kiss us on the cheek with those warm rays of sunshine. Only then will we be able to official say – it’s summer. And I’m ready for some picnic weather. I’ve even gathered a list of summertime fun for the family.

Let’s see. Outdoor festivals, Movies in the Park, Six Flags Great America, plus well-coordinated family outings accompanied by delicious foods, beverages and maybe a dessert or two. Okay, a few desserts, and plenty of laughter and great music!

So what are your plans for the summer?
